Degree Qualifications Profile
The Tuning project poses a simple and practical question: What should students’ majors aim to achieve – overall and at different degree levels? (OR When students complete a program of study in a field, what should they know, understand, and be able to do?)
The Degree Qualifications Profile (DQP) raises a related question: What qualities of learning and practice does post-secondary education develop at different degree levels? (OR When students complete an associates, bachelors, or masters degree, what should they know, understand, and be able to do?) Therefore, the DQP is a tool to outline clearly common expectations for achievement to be eligible for a degree, independent of major. By expressing these expectations in terms of behaviors that can be assessed, the DQP has potential to bring consistency to the level of expectation U.S. higher education has for students working toward college or university degrees. Lumina Foundation has brought leaders of U.S. higher education together to work on the DQP, to refine that work, and to experiment with implementation.
A DQP can be thought of as an umbrella of expectations that applies to degrees in all disciplines. It works in concert with Tuning, which defines learning outcomes for degrees in a particular discipline, thus making the general expectations in the DQP specific to a particular major. Draft Degree Qualifications ProfileA draft "Degree Qualifications Profile" was issued by the Lumina Foundation in 2011. Since then, a multi-pronged effort has emerged to test, revise, and implement the DQP. The DQP document can be found at
